How to make your own Lip Balm

[printfriendly]

That famous line, “you are what you eat”, was coined by the French physician Anthelme Brillat-Savarin in 1826. He believed that whatever we put into our bodies will eventually manifest in our appearance and, I suppose, also says something about who we are. It has since seeped into global pop culture as a helpful mantra for anyone attempting to make a lifestyle change – or simply to make a point. Working with a skincare brand seems strange for a chef, but to me, working with Africology was a no-brainer. Every product they develop starts in the kitchen. In fact, their products are so raw and natural, they’re totally edible, and in the case of this lip balm, kissable. Who knew lip balm could be so good!

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons coconut oil

1 tablespoon jojoba oil

2 tablespoons grated beeswax

1 ml cocoa butter

1 x vitamin E capsule

8 – 20 drops essential oils, such as orange or peppermint. (Add more drops for citrus oils and less for stronger oils like peppermint)

Optional: 1 – 2 teaspoon of grated beetroot or beetroot powder to add tint. Leave it out for a neutral-coloured lip balm

METHOD

In a small saucepan over low heat, melt together coconut oil, jojoba oil, cocoa butter, and beeswax.

Once the oils have melted, remove the saucepan from heat.

Stir in vitamin E essential oils, and add the beetroot powder. Mix until completely incorporated. But be careful, as the mix will solidify quickly.

Pour the mixture into prepared container and allow it to cool until hardened.
