A West Coast escape to Yzerfontein
There’s something about the West Coast that just resets you. Maybe it’s the light. Maybe it’s the wind. Maybe it’s that first proper lungful of Atlantic air when you arrive and realise there’s nowhere you need to be in a hurry. I just enjoyed a magical stay at Sandpiper in Yzerfontein and it helped me realise that the beauty of a West Coast getaway isn’t complicated or flashy, it’s built on early mornings, sandy feet and coffee on a stoep while the sea does its thing in the background.
THE LUXURY OF SPACE
One of my favourite things about Yzerfontein is that it gives you space, real space. Sixteen Mile Beach stretches on and on, and even in season it never feels crowded. You can walk for kilometres with nothing but your thoughts, the sound of waves and the occasional fisherman casting into the surf. Out at sea, dolphins show off and in the right season whales remind you just how small you are in the bigger scheme of things.
THE SMALL RITUALS THAT MAKE IT SPECIAL
A breakaway in this part of the world is my chance to get away from some of the stress of my everyday routine, and it didn’t take me long to fall into a new routine. Think coffee while the sun comes up, a long beach walk before breakfast and a stop at the local bakery for something warm and unnecessary. Afternoons are for doing very little at all, spending time with the book I’ve been threatening to finish for a while, listening to the wind off the sea and letting the day stretch out slowly.
Evenings are for doing what South Africans do best, gathering around a table or a fire, if the west coast wind allows that is. And then there’s my favourite ritual, watching the sky change from a soft pink, slowly turning gold as the sun sinks toward the horizon.
THE PERFECT HIDEAWAY
Tucked into this untamed beauty is Sandpiper, a classic beach bungalow that fits right into its surroundings. It’s the perfect blend of aesthetic and practical, thoughtfully designed without feeling overworked or overstyled. Comfortable, open and made for real holidays, it’s the kind of place where doors and windows stay open and sandy feet are simply part of the rhythm of the day.
With three ensuite bedrooms, including a top-floor suite that feels like you’re perched above the ocean, there’s space for everyone to spread out without losing that sense of togetherness. The living areas flow onto the stoep, and you can enjoy ocean views from almost every angle.
Sandpiper captures the spirit of how West Coast living should feel – barefoot, happy and unhurried, a celebration of sea air and time well spent. I can’t wait for my next visit.
