A Century in a Bottle: 100 Years of Alto Rouge

Raise your glass and toast to an extraordinary milestone in the world of winemaking—2024 marks the release of the 100th vintage of Alto Rouge, a South African staple that has captured the hearts of wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. From its inception in 1922 to becoming a household name, Alto Rouge’s legacy is one of passion, tradition, and innovation, encapsulated in every bottle.

The Beginnings of an Icon

The story of Alto Rouge began just after World War I, when Hennie Malan made a decision that would forever change the landscape of South African winemaking. Nestled on the sun-drenched slopes of the Helderberg, Alto Wine Estate was born from the upper portion of the original Groenrivier farm. Named for its altitude and breathtaking views, “Alto” was a proclamation of ambition and possibility.

The real magic began with Manie Malan, Hennie’s son, who armed with a degree in Viticulture and Oenology, set about planting vines under the watchful eye of the renowned viticulturist Abraham Izak Perold. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Cinsault, and Pinot Noir became the backbone of Alto Rouge, a wine destined for greatness.

Crafting the First Vintage

In 1922, the first vintage of Alto Rouge was crafted, a blend that would define the estate’s legacy. By innovatively blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Shiraz and Cinsault, Manie Malan created a wine that was lush, complex, and approachable. The world took notice, and in 1924, Alto Rouge was exported to the UK, where it earned accolades and quickly became a favourite among British wine lovers. Its success overseas paved the way for its release in South Africa in 1933, where it remains a cherished classic.

Evolution and Excellence

Over the past century, Alto Rouge has evolved while staying true to its roots. The blend now includes Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Merlot, each grape adding complexity and depth to the wine’s profile. Yet, the essence of Alto Rouge remains unchanged—a testament to the land and the people who have dedicated their lives to crafting this exceptional wine.

Under the stewardship of legendary cellarmasters, including Piet du Toit, Hempies du Toit, and now Bertho van der Westhuizen, Alto Rouge has continued to thrive. Bertho, only the fifth winemaker in Alto’s illustrious history, honours the past while pushing the boundaries of quality and innovation. His leadership and commitment to excellence have guided Alto Rouge into the 21st century, ensuring its place among the world’s finest wines.

A Legacy of Recognition

In this centennial year, Alto Estate has once again been recognised for its extraordinary contributions to winemaking. At the prestigious Veritas Awards, Alto Rouge 2022 and Alto Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 both received Double Gold medals, affirming the estate’s reputation for excellence. These awards serve as a reminder that, while Alto celebrates its rich history, it remains steadfast in its pursuit of outstanding quality.
