Somewhere past Montagu, the tar gives up and the gravel takes over. Twenty-two kilometres later, the Klein Karoo opens into something almost private, a farmhouse-turned-hideaway called Jackal’s Rest, where the loudest thing for miles is the wind moving through the fynbos. It’s the kind of place that makes you realise how loud your ordinary life has become.
I’ve always believed the best places don’t announce themselves. They arrive slowly, the way this one does. Mountain by mountain, bend by bend, until the noise of ordinary life has quietly fallen away behind you. By the time the house comes into view, low and unhurried against the Anysberg, you’ve already started to exhale.
A KLEIN KAROO RETREAT THAT LISTENS TO ITS LANDSCAPE
What drew me in most was the restraint to Jackal’s Rest. Two bedrooms, dressed simply and beautifully, open onto living spaces built for gathering rather than performing. Earthy materials, soft linens, a kind of cabin-quiet that doesn’t try too hard. It’s the unpretentious sort of interior that lets the view do most of the talking and out here, overlooking the Anysberg mountains and the rolling shoulders of the Klein Karoo, the view has plenty to say.
SLOW MORNINGS IN THIS MONTAGU HIDEAWAY, LONGER EVENINGS BY THE FIRE
The fireplaces say it all, wood-burning units hold both the kitchen and the living area, which tells you something about how the days here are meant to be spent, slowly, and mostly around a flame. Breakfast arrives each morning without asking. Firewood is stacked generously by every fireside spot, as if someone anticipated exactly how long you’d want to stay wrapped in a blanket before moving. There’s a projector for the nights that call for a film, and a shelf of board games for the ones that don’t.
Beyond the design, here’s what truly sets it apart: hospitality is often just thoughtfulness worn quietly, and here it shows up in the small, unglamorous details. Filter coffee. Bottled water. Daily servicing. An honesty bar stocked with local treats. Everything has already been thought of, leaving you nothing to do but truly unwind.
THE SOCIAL HEART: BRAAI, PIZZA OVEN & GATHERING SPACES
The indoor braai and wood-fired pizza oven are, unsurprisingly, where I’d choose to spend most of my time. You can bring your own provisions, Montagu’s markets and roadside padstals practically beg for it, or let a seasonal meal package do the work, with fresh pasta, bread and pizza dough arranged in advance. Either way, the kitchen becomes the room everyone drifts back to, flour on the counters, something in the oven, the day’s plans loosely made and happily broken.
DAYS SHAPED BY THE KAROO LANDSCAPE, NOT THE CLOCK
Outside, a sun deck stretches toward the mountains beside a zinc dam pool. At dusk, the wood-fired hot tub becomes the evening’s quiet gathering point as the first stars appearing almost on cue..
For those who want to venture out, there are electric bicycles for exploring the farm at an unhurried pace, guided nature drives for those who’d rather let someone else do the navigating, and sundowners in spots clearly chosen by someone who knows the land well.
Mostly, though, the itinerary is the Karoo itself. Shadows moving across the mountains. Birds cutting through an enormous sky. The occasional antelope, unbothered, wandering past as if you were the ones being observed.
WHAT STAYS WITH YOU
At the end of it all, there’s a particular kind of stillness you only find a few hours outside a city. Jackal’s Rest holds that stillness well. Not because it tries to impress you, but because it doesn’t try to at all. It offers you space, silence, and sky and lets you fill the rest in with whatever you came here to remember, or forget.
