WHERE LUXURY, ART AND BEAUTY CONVERGE

When I’m back home visiting Cape Town, my favourite place to stay is Ellerman House. It isn’t just this luxury retreat’s iconic location perched atop the dramatic cliffs of Bantry Bay that appeals to me, it is the attention to detail throughout the property and its magnificent gardens. I thought Ellerman House was perfect before, but after a recent soft refurb it was lovely to visit again and see how they have added even more special touches throughout.

Being surrounded by so much beauty really feeds my soul and sparks my creative energy – I treasure every moment I get to spend there, whether it is taking time out to relax in my beautifully appointed room, strolling through the gardens, dipping in and out of the infinity pool, or watching the sun slip into the Atlantic as I enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace from Ellerman House’s impressively stocked cellar.

It’s no surprise that this Relais & Châteaux five-star property – a favourite with A-listers and seasoned travellers – was recently voted the third best hotel in the world in The Telegraph’s World’s Best 50 Hotels for 2024. Ellerman House offers guests an unparalleled experience that seamlessly blends timeless elegance with contemporary comforts.

At the heart of this tranquil oasis lies the owner’s private art collection, boasting over 1000 works that showcase the rich cultural tapestry of the region. Each piece tells a captivating story, immersing visitors in the artistic spirit of South Africa. The hotel’s dedication to the arts is a testament to its unwavering pursuit of living life beautifully – a sentiment that resonates deeply with me.

The recent two-month soft refurbishment has seen the addition of thoughtful updates to selected rooms, as well as the public areas, breathing new life into this iconic retreat. Stylish carpeting, vibrant exterior and interior paint, and a refined restaurant refresh have all contributed to an enhanced level of sophistication and comfort.

Ellerman House is unique in that it is a space where guests appreciate its intimacy (there are only 13 rooms, each a luxurious exercise in elegance-with-a-view) while enjoying a level of discreet and professional service that befits its global status as a bucket-list destination. The two secluded contemporary-styled garden villas offer privacy for families or friends and include the likes of personalised service and chef for each, an infinity pool and a private spa, cinema room or reading room, depending on which you reserve.

The property’s impressive amenities, including a world-class spa with its newly added rejuvenating “Polar Plunge” pool, and the recently revamped restaurant, offer guests, many of whom return again and again, a truly luxurious and immersive experience.

As the sun settles into the ocean, casting a glow over Ellerman House and Cape Town’s majestic landmark, Lions Head, it is impossible not to be captivated by this boutique retreat’s timeless allure. It is a place where the elegance of the past seamlessly blends with the modern luxuries of the present, creating an unrivalled experience that has solidified Ellerman House’s standing as a true jewel in the crown of Cape Town’s hospitality landscape.
