In France, a tradition abounds amongst many French fathers that when his sons turn 18, they are gifted a beautiful penknife to last them the rest of their lives. It’s the kind of thing that makes me miss my father tremendously, and that reminds me of what I love about France. Opinel is one of those trustworthy French brands you can always rely upon for its quality and consistency, and while this knife doesn’t necessarily fall under the “heirloom” category, it is a gadget that I bought myself many years ago and that I cannot go without. In my opinion, there’s no better way to cut your biltong and open a bottle of wine at the same time. True story. Just remember not to pack it in your hand luggage when you travel! Forgetting to do so will end in tears. Another true story.
